Abu-Ghazaleh Appointed UN Special Ambassador of Tourism and Sustainable Development Goals





AMMAN- The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the United Nations Specialized Agency for Tourism has named HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh a Special Ambassador of Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals until the next UNWTO General Assembly that will be held in Saint Petersburg in the second half of 2019.

In a letter addressed to Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh by HE. Mr. Taleb Refai, Secretary General of the UNWTO thanking him for his effort and dedication to the tourism sector, Refai said: "Thanks to your advocacy efforts and support, we have been able to promote the value and contribution of sustainable tourism to development, economic growth, cultural and environmental protection, mutual understanding and peace as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."

Refai continued saying: "The UNWTO looks forward to pursuing a better world with the help of your kind ambassadorship."

Expressing his pride in the work of the UNWTO and its leadership, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh said: "It is a great honor for me to be part of the future vision of the UNWTO which has been the watchful eye on the tourism sector around the world. Our relation with the UNWTO has resulted in building various strategies for this important sector which is in need of collective efforts to develop for a better future."  

Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh's involvement in the tourism sector resulted in signing an MoU with the UNWTO to establish the first International Smart Tourism Center with headquarters in Amman and hosted by Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization, the Center will be headed by Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh as chair and a Board of Directors which includes high-profile individuals, UNWTO Special Ambassadors and experts in the field of tourism with HE Mr. Refai as the honorary chair. 

It is worth noting that Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh has chaired more than 14 UN taskforces and initiatives and he was Vice Chair with Their Excellencies Kofi Anan and Ban Ki-moon of the UN Global Compact as well as being a member of several UN programs, most recently being named a member of the United Nations Social Impact Fund High Level Advisory Board (UNSIF-HLAB).
